The distributed energy resource (DER) refers to the small-scale energy generation and storage units, as well as flexible loads. Microgrids are distribution systems with a group of interconnected loads and DERs within clearly defined electrical boundaries that act as a single controllable entity with respect to the main grid. A microgrid can connect and disconnect from the main grid to enable it to operate in both grid-connected and islanded modes. This book focuses on three research problems of the DERs in the microgrid: planning, operation, and control.
