In this book we will review the history of the creation and modernization of the British cruiser tank Cromwell. Also here are given the tactical and technical characteristics of this remarkable combat vehicle and added data on combat use.

The original concept of the Cromwell tank provided for the armament of its 57 mm (6 lb.) gun. However, by the middle of 1941, the Tank Board realized that the 6-pound gun, which was in service with British tanks, did not meet the requirements of the battlefield. Tanks Panzerwaffe with 75-mm guns (PzKpfw IV) had superiority in firepower. It was planned to adopt a new 17-pound (76.2 mm) gun. But the delay in its development and launch into mass production led to the fact that the 17-lb did not become a mass weapon.

In 1942, opinions on the main tank armament were divided: the imperial headquarters in general suited and improved the 57 mm cannon, provided it was guaranteed to operate both in tanks and in the enemy's manpower. The command of the 8th Army, which fought in Africa - at that time the only consumer of this materiel - considered an ideal tank gun a 75-mm cannon with shells of armor-piercing and high-explosive fragmentation and required at least a small number of tanks with such weapons.
