The first in a new series exploring the basics of Raspberry Pi Operating System (OS) administration, this volume is a compendium of easy-to-use and essential system administration for the novice user of the Raspberry Pi OS. The overriding idea behind the system administration of a modern, 21st-century Linux system such as the Raspberry Pi OS is the use of systemd to ensure that the Linux kernel works efficiently and effectively to provide the three foundation stones of computer operation and management: computer system concurrency, virtualization, and secure persistence. Exercises are included throughout to reinforce the readers’ learning goals with solutions and example code provided on the accompanying GitHub site. This book is a compendium of easy-to-use and essential Raspberry Pi OS system administration tasks for the beginner. The Raspberry Pi OS is derived from the Debian branch of Linux, and as of this writing, Debian Bullseye was the most current version of that operating system. To present the system administration topics and commands here, I have selected some very basic stuff, and a few more advanced concepts, topics, commands, and details that might not appear in a more complete system administration book.

This Linux training course, “Using and Administering Linux – Zero to SysAdmin,” is significantly different from other courses. It consists of three volumes. Each of these three volumes is closely connected, and they build upon each other. This Linux training course differs from others because it is a complete self-study course. You should start at the beginning of Volume 1 and read the text, perform all of the experiments, and do all of the chapter exercises through to the end of Volume 3. If you do this, even if you are starting from zero knowledge about Linux, you can learn the tasks necessary to becoming a Linux system administrator, a SysAdmin. These course materials can also be used as reference materials. I have used my previous course materials for reference for many years, and they have been very useful in that role. I have kept this as one of my goals in this set of materials. If you want to learn to be an advanced Linux user and even a SysAdmin, this course is for you. Most SysAdmins have an extremely high level of curiosity and a deep-seated need to learn Linux system administration.
